Whack Ass WiFi Issue

Someone send me a Broadcomm engineer, electrical engineer and a physicist! I have a whack technical issue on my work laptop that makes less than zero sense to me.

So I’m on FiOS and have symmetrical 75/75MBPS service… And I notice that pages are loading slow. So I do a speed test and I’m getting 1MBPS down and 10MBPS up… Odd… Here’s a bullet list of things I did to troubleshoot (using bullets to get to the point so you’re not reading a giant block of text):

  • Checked other devices on the network and they were all fine; getting full speed
  • Rebooted the laptop [didn’t work]
  • Reinstalled the wireless drivers [didn’t work]
  • Rebooted the router/access point for shits and giggles [didn’t work]
  • Unplugged my laptop AC adapter [WORKED] (wtf?)

So… the AC adapter is causing some kind of interference. What the hell could this be? Is it a problem with the adapter brick causing interference? Or is it a hardware issue with my radio in the laptop?

  • I tested this on another laptop on and off AC power, and that was fine, so it’s not any kind of electrical problem

Here’s where it gets really whack though:

It only happens on the 5ghz band; not the 2.4… So to further test this out, I also reproduced this off my FiOS network with my LTE hotspot…

  • Laptop on battery; using 2.4 ghz band on my LTE hotspot [works fine]
  • Laptop on AC power; using 2.4 ghz band on my LTE hotspot [works fine]
  • Laptop on AC power; using 2.4 ghz band on my LTE hotspot with the hotspot plugged in to a wall outlet[works fine]
  • Laptop on battery; using 5 ghz band on my LTE hotspot [works fine]
  • Laptop on AC power; using 5 ghz band on my LTE hotspot [works fine]
  • Laptop on AC power; using 5 ghz band on my LTE hotspot with the hotspot plugged in to a wall outlet[SLOW]

Also repeated the tests above on FiOS home Wifi and got the same results. WUT in the actual fuck is going on here?

I don’t have enough info to narrow it down between the AC adapter (need to get a new one from work) or if it’s just a faulty broadcomm chip where the shielding is all jacked up and getting interference. Who knows.

Yo IT people – gimme a new laptop kthxbai. Ain’t got no time for this shit

I Hope This Flat Earther’s Homemade Rocket Crashes

Rants, Science

space.com -A flat-Earth enthusiast who claims not to believe in science plans to launch himself 1,800 feet (550 meters) above California’s Mojave Desert in a homemade steam rocket on Saturday (Nov. 25), theAssociated Press reported.

“I don’t believe in science,” Hughes said, according to the AP. “I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction.”

Nothing would make me happier than to see this guy’s rocket crash. It’s 2017. Even the Catholic church believes the world is round. I mean it only took them 350 years to get it right in 1992. We can’t have these flat-Earther nutjobs running around spreading lies. Before you know it, we’ll have Trump signing executive orders on the subject. Make Earth flat again!

And what’s this noise that he doesn’t believe in science? He understands aerodynamics, fluid dynamics and things moving through the air? Uhhh, that sounds like physics to me. Last time I checked, physics and how things move through air is science. Air. Our atmosphere. Not science? Moron. This is why we need natural selection to kill these people off.

Any flat-earther deserves the Dolores Umbridge “I must not tell lies” punishment that gets carved into their hands:

Brand New Server and HTTPS

I don’t really blog anymore and have been too lazy to update/migrate the server this used to be hosted on. The VM it used to be on was completely corrupted, was so old the vendor no longer provided updates and thus was insecure af (aka I used to FTP to the shit to update my files That’s right… FTP. Sending a password in plain text. NOPE). It was also using like php 5.2 which was an antique and vulnerable.

As practice for a personal project, I migrated it to a modern VM, added it to Cloudflare and am using the latest and greatest OS and webserver components. Hooray! No one cares. Not even me.
