Android App of the Week: Launcher Pro (I’m actually excited)

Note: If you have the Droid X with Motoblur, or SenseUI, this probably doesn’t apply since your skin already has some of these features. But if you have an original Droid or don’t like Sense or Motoblur, read on:

Everyone needs to download this Launcher Pro immediately. This isn’t an app. It’s a complete homescreen replacement. What does it do? It pretty much gives you up to 7 homescreens, and replaces the bland app drawer slider with the bottom bar from Froyo. I know I first said that anyone who skins Android is an asshole. That’s still true, but this does not count so I’m not a hypocrite. It is based on Froyo (Android 2.2) and doesn’t redo the icons to look dumb (like HTC sense does).

Take a look at the before and after:

The bar on the bottom is called the dock. In Android 2.1 on the Moto Droid, you only get the app drawer slider. Motorola and/or Verizon stripped out the 3D app drawer and the 5 homescreens that made it in the 2.1 update for the Nexus One. In Froyo and in Android 2.2, this is standard. If Motorola/Verizon release Android 2.2 without more homescreens and with the same half assed app drawer, I will be super pissed. So along comes Launcher Pro. Take a look at my before and after screenshots above. The screenshot on the right is better because it neatly packs my phone dialer, contacts, app drawer, messaging and browser on the bottom, so I don’t have to have icons for all of those all over my homescreen. See how much more space I have? That vertical slider thing under the app drawer (the checker square thing) tells you what homescreen I’m on.

This homescreen replacement has shitloads of options and you can pretty much customize anything you want. To access options, hit your menu button from the homescreen and click Preferences, which will bring up a settings menu (left screenshot). You can enable the 3D app drawer, change the dock background, lock the background wallpaper from scrolling when you switch screens, add unread message and missed call counts, etc. It also has an expose (that OSX thing where it shows all the homescreens together(see right image). You can backup your homescreens to a settings file on the SD card and restore them on that phone or another device.

So in conclusion, this probably slows down your phone and uses more battery, but it looks mad good, gives you Froyo looking homescreen and shortcuts and if you have the original Droid, you can add up to 7 homescreens. Epic win in my book.

I will absolutely uninstall this if Verizon’s 2.2 update includes multiple homescreens, a dock and the app drawer. But until then, this made my phone so much more convenient.

To get this bad boy running is a little confusing, since it doesn’t run like an app. Once you download it, press your home button on your phone. It will ask you if you want to “complete action using” Home or Launcher Pro. Check “use by default for this action” then click launcher pro. If you don’t it will ask you if you want to use the native home app or the custom Launcher every time. To restore this and get your normal homescreen back, you can clear the default by going to Settings–>Applications–>Manage Applications and clicking on Launcher Pro, then clicking Clear defaults. When you press the home screen again, it will bring up the “complete action using” Home or Launcher Pro option. Check the box and then click Home. OR EASIER – ignore all that babble and just uninstall it.

Download it from the market below (scan it or click the barcode on your phone):

Can Summer End Already?

I fucking hate summer. All I do is go to work in hot ass buildings, come home, pass out, wake up and repeat. Guess what? I can do that when it’s 40 degrees out just as well, minus sweating balls. Seriously. I don’t live near a beach, so I’m not at the beach. I don’t go to pools much. No one goes on vacation (and if I did, I’m dead serious I’d go on an Alaska cruise). I don’t do the stereotypical summer outdoor activities. I’m home in my AC, and it’s boring as hell. And it needs to end now.

No one seems to understand that if it’s cold, you can always bundle up, snuggle, put more clothes on etc. But if it’s hot and there’s no AC, there’s nothing you can do.

Also, the good part of summer is already over. For me, summer is only tolerable until July 4th. The beginning of summer is always fun because you just get out of school and you have the whole entire summer to look forward to. I like seasons, so I need a little summer, but I’ll take 1-2 weeks max before I hate it to death. But after July 4th, it drags on, nothing else is fun and all I used to do was count down days to school so I can have a[n unhealthy] life again. Although I’m done with school so…

There are so many good things coming up this fall/winter, I just want to hibernate until its 65 degrees or below outside. Then I’ll come out and enjoy these:

  • September 14, 2010 (technically still summer but close enough) – New Linkin Park Album. It better not be whiny and annoying. If it’s like anything prior to 2003, (and 1-2 songs from Minutes to Midnight), it’ll be good.
  • September 19, 2010 – HBO’s Boardwalk Empire series premier. Scorsese? Atlantic City mob scene in the 1920s. Sick. It’s HBO, so it’s guaranteed to be good.
  • September 21, 2010 – Autumn. It better start cooling the hell off soon
  • September 26, 2010 – Season 5 Premier of Dexter. That show is the shit.
  • December 25, 2010Christmas
  • December 29, 2010The Machine is at BB King’s in NYC. Who’s coming with?
  • Q4 2010 / Q1 2011 – Android 3.0 Gingerbread. Yummy!
  • 2011 sometime – New Red Hot Chili Peppers Album. Not much details are known. Might be different without Frusciante.
  • Winter 2011 – I need to visit D-Porpz in that state where old people live and everyone else vacations at.
  • March 2011 – Round up college friends (or whoever the hell wants to go with me) and book spring break while pretending to still be college students, not an old unemployed, fat, lazy bum. Anyway, yatta yatta yatta college girls yatta yatta. This is to make up for the fact that I didn’t get a chance to go away on spring break while I was in college (what a waste). It’s also an attempt for me to step away from reality and stop crying that my life sucks now that I graduated.

See? There’s a lot of good shit coming up, and it’s not during summer. Mec – 1. Summer – 0.

RIM Just Bitched out Apple

In Apple’s press conference about their piece of shit iPhone 4 antenna, they pretty much denied that there was an issue, yet offered a solution anyway (free case anyone?). Feeling gulity much? Apple also ripped on RIM, Nokia and HTC that all these smartphones have antenna problems. That is bullshit. They’re just trying to make themselves look bad.

As much as I hate Blackberries and think Droids are better, I hate Apple more. So I applaud RIM’s statement, which pretty much says in a nice way: “Hey Apple, you fucked up. Don’t drag us into this and tell people all phones with internal antennas have this issue – our antennas are fine”

The statement:

Apple’s attempt to draw RIM into Apple’s self-made debacle is unacceptable. Apple’s claims about RIM products appear to be deliberate attempts to distort the public’s understanding of an antenna design issue and to deflect attention from Apple’s difficult situation. RIM is a global leader in antenna design and has been successfully designing industry-leading wireless data products with efficient and effective radio performance for over 20 years. During that time, RIM has avoided designs like the one Apple used in the iPhone 4 and instead has used innovative designs which reduce the risk for dropped calls, especially in areas of lower coverage. One thing is for certain, RIM’s customers don’t need to use a case for their BlackBerry smartphone to maintain proper connectivity. Apple clearly made certain design decisions and it should take responsibility for these decisions rather than trying to draw RIM and others into a situation that relates specifically to Apple.

Saturday’s Song of the Week: Stu’s Song

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nH9u_kf-Vc

Yes, I am dead serious. This song has been stuck in my head all week long. As you all know, The Hangover is the shit. I’ve been learning the shit out of it and anyone who lives with me is sick of hearing it. Here, have the sheet music (guitar tabs are included there, if you like guitar better).

P.S – There were numerous occasions last school year where I expected to find a tiger when I woke up the next mor… afternoon. It was my running joke of the year: “where’s the tiger?”

Then you’re shit out of luck.

18th Century Ship Exhumed at World Trade Center Site – So workers found an 18th century ship buried underground? Let me get this straight. Why didn’t they find this in the early 1970s when they dug the foundation on the World Trade Center?

Google Spent $100 Million Defending YouTube Against Viacom – Fuck Viacom and anyone who wants to sue for intellectual property damage these days. First off, Goolgle fully complies with takedown requests, so what the hell is the issue. Half the time I go to watch a Youtube video, it’s pulled down for Christ’s sake. Secondly, Viacom employees probably uploaded copyrighted videos on purpose to plant false evidence. Scumbag company. Wait a sec… $100 million on a lawsuit just to get it dismissed? Jeez! Must be nice when you turn a $3.6 billion profit in 3 months.

I Want this Fucking Thermostat – Is this thing badass, or am I just a geek? Basically you put solar panels on your roof and this thing controls everything, plus you can manage your thermostat and see power usage/ how much power your solar cells generated from anywhere on the internets. My house is facing south and bakes in the sun nonstop from 9am to 5PM, so I roast balls all day if the AC isn’t on. Really, tell the government to pay for me to install this system (they spend money out of control anyway on useless shit, so I might as well get free handouts). I’m green, bitches.

I was going to post more links but then I stopped caring.
