Generic Laptop Rant #324

I hate my laptop. It’s old, slow and has a bunch of quirks that are pissing me off. It’s hanging in there, but it’s on its way out. I refuse to get a new one until Windows 7 is out, plus I don’t really feel like spending money right now (bad economy, I cut spending like everyone else). The latest annoyance? Severe overheating. That’s right. Anytime, the CPU is at 100% for about 5 minutes or more, or the fan is slightly blocked – BOOM, power down. This is becoming very frequent during high CPU tasks such as video encoding/ playback, photo editing, Google Earth, etc.

I’m kind of scared, because this happened to someone else with my exact model. It started slowly, but eventually wouldn’t stay on past a few seconds. So who knows when this thing will kick? I can tell you one thing though. It’s annoying as hell to be in the middle of something and then it just powers down. Fuckin’ stop that shit. Bitch ass trick.

I Love this Blog

If you are reading this from the front page of portfolioso.com, you should leave and click on the link to my blog. Have I mentioned how much I love this blog lately? I just upgraded this badass to WordPress 2.8 instead of going to bed. WordPress is the most amazing thing ever (well not really, but when it comes to blogging engines, probably). The iNove theme is amazing and it’s so purrrdy. The WordPress admin interface is so ballin’ I just can’t stay out of it (that’s what he said). In addition, it is organized so nicely that I can’t help but read my archived posts from way back. If you haven’t played around with the search, categories, tags, archives or any other feature on this blog, I suggest you do, because it is amazing and user friendly. Plus, you can learn a lot about me by reading my old stupidity (and see how much of an immature kid I was back in freshman year of high school). The only things lacking now are consistent updates that actually interest people. But now that the interface is so awesome, what more motivation do I need to keep blogging away?

Shameless plug…

Site Theme Upgrades

I upgraded the blog to the latest iNove theme. As you can see, the search box looks cooler. In addition, The right sidebar had an extra div and had a divider on top, before any content started. That was useless, and now it’s gone. Of course, doing the upgrade broke all of my custom hacks, such as my random quote generator on top and some other behind the scenes stuff that I added. In addition, I removed thickbox support because it caused my CSS3 to invalidate. No one cares, so hopefully I’ll have a useful post soon.

Wrapping it up from the Digg Meetup in NYC

Digg meetup yesterday at Webster Hall was absolute insanity. Good times, great show, good entertainment, and best of all, pics with Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht. They also signed my poster. I know this post sounds like I’m a little kid, but it’s sweet.

So here’s the breakdown of events:

  • We arrived at Webster hall in downtown Manhattan around 6:30. Klondike is sponsoring, so they’re giving away free Klondike bars. Yum!
  • Doors opened around 7:45PM and there’s a huge crowd waiting to get in. We were attacked by hot MSNBC interns giving out decks of cards. I told them they really shouldn’t and that I was giving out my card instead. Anyway…. This is why I don’t have a job this summer. Next, I run into this IT guy I knew from work – small world. He built this dude and wanted it signed by the Hak5 guys. Really cool shit. Next, some really smokin squarespace.com interns gave us free drink vouchers for dancing like a “white boy” for 5 seconds. Sick.
  • I’m probably going to be on Revision 3’s website because a camera crew interviewed us and had us act crazy for meetup footage. That should be interesting… No comment.
  • Jay Adleson, CEO of Revision 3 came out on stage and talked for a bit, and introduced some sweet beat boxers and freestyle guys who were making stuff up based on what was showing up on a screen in realtime on Digg Labs’ BigSpy.
  • Here’s where the show began. Episode 206 – watch it next week when it’s released. Some time in the middle of it, I had to take a huge piss (too much info?) but naturally didn’t leave during the middle of the show. No further comment on that.
  • After that ended, there were some MySpace DJs/ bands and the place cleared out because the geeks had to get home. I fought an insane crowd to Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht to meet them. Kevin is actually cooler than Alex, but I had three things to say to Alex:
    1. It’s southern California and I have fruit
    2. Apple Fanboys suck
    3. I agreed with his point of view over Kevin’s regarding ATM security. He was like dude, thanks.
  • If you are the girls from the photo booth and are reading this, tell me who the f you are, you were smokin’. And thanks for putting up with me dragging you in there. That was sketch, I would have been scared also. But I’m not a creep so it was all cool.

Sweet times! Week of Portfoliosofest continues!
