Random Tech Rant You Won’t Care About

Windows 7 is absolutely amazing. I have a spare harddrive with it installed that I swap out on occasion to test it out, but my computer is too shitty to run it full time. Since XP does what I need for now, I’ll keep it until I junk this laptop (soon?).

So little by little, I’m testing software to see if it works and learning the new OS, because I’m still way back in 2002 and haven’t left XP yet.

Administrative shares are disabled by default, but I got those working with a registry hack. Yay

Here’s the shit part: What the FUCK did you do to the firewall? It’s so fucking confusing, and I know everything about computers. Okay, it’s simple to add programs as exceptions, but when you view it in advanced mode, it looks like a confusing pile of crap.

Second complaint, I couldn’t get my SSH server up and running or past the firewall. Well sort of. It only worked on port 22, which is exactly the port I do NOT want to run it on. When I changed the port in the config file, it refused connections from my other computer. Secondly, it only worked with the firewall off. Sorry. I tried adding port exceptions (inbound & outbound), program exceptions, etc to no avail. Suppose I get it working eventually. I don’t want my firewall off. There’s no way in hell I’m running an SSH server with password authentication and no firewall for anyone to scan and hack me on So now if I switch to Windows 7, I’ll have to have an XP box set up just to run my fucking SSH server, since it’s temperamental on Windows 7. Thanks. Fix it.

So if anyone actually understands any of this, I’ll give you a cookie (maybe). Oh and fuck the National League for winning the All Star Game. Christ, Phil Hughes. Way to put the Yankees to shame. Now I can’t get home field advantage.

Random News Story Commentary (7/13/2010)

Here are some random tech (and non tech) stories that have been interesting overt the past few days. Hey, wouldn’t this make a good daily segment to this blog? Yes it would, and I’m not doing it. 1) I only have 3 readers and 2) it takes up too much time. I could be sleeping or something like that. It was actually really fun to gather, so maybe I’ll do it when I feel like it. We’ll see. The stories:

Steinbrenner Dies at 80 – Jeez. First Bob Sheppard, now him? We better be winning the World Series this year in their honor. George was a generous man, a leader, wonderful businessman and truly cared about winning and his fans. R.I.P Georgie.

Consumer Reports Slams the iPhone 4Good. It’s a piece of shit. If you haven’t heard the news, Consumer Reports did it’s official review on the iPhone 4 and could not recommend it because its antenna issues are a real problem. According to lab tests, holding the phone in the wrong spot (AKA holding it normally) degrades the signal enough to drop a call, which explains why the jokeface Apple fanboy over at The Other Mac Blog hangs up on me 5 times whenever we have a 10 minute phone conversation. Jobs is now on suicide watch. I bet some engineer is really an Apple hater and did it on purpose. This is what happens when you only let one dude test the prototype and he loses it at a bar. Oh, and threads about the Consumer Reports review keep disappearing off of Apple’s user forums. Sweet censorship, Apple. What the hell is this, China?

Moron Wants to Send Android Phone into Space – This joker raised $2,000 from 65 people for supplies that will launch his EVO4G into space. The dude wants to launch it in a balloon, use it to take pictures and track it with GPS. First off, GPS loses signal after a certain elevation. Secondly, someone already did this on a $150 budget. I just don’t get it. The battery won’t last past 8,000 feet on that thing. I can think of 487 other uses of that money, such as alcohol, strippers, top hats or the Portfolioso is currently unemployed fund.

Nick Swisher Lost the Shit out of the Home Run Derby – Congrats to David ‘Roids Ortiz. Doesn’t matter, the derby is by far the most boring sporting event on television, I fell asleep right after the third batter in round 1. It’s almost as bad as soccer. Nick Swisher is still my boy. The real news is that Bobby Valentine predicted that Jose Ortiz would win it. Typical grandpa thing to do – take a dude with a hispanic name and randomly generate a hispanic first name (Juan Ortiz, Luiz Ortiz, Ramon Ortiz, Miguel Ortiz, whatever – same person.) And to think, I wanted that senile man to manage my team after Torre left.

Dear Google, Please Invite me to the Android AppInventor beta – If you haven’t heard of AppInventor in the news recently, it’s all the rage. Google is developing a tool to create Android Apps in your browser without knowing the java programming. It will be a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) tool that will allow anyone to develop an app. This is good and bad. The good is that it’s designed for educators and that supposedly, this tool can be used to access almost anything that Android can do. The bad: the marketplace is already cluttered with junk apps and this will most certainly add more. Just look at WYSIWYG web editors – they work, but they make 1995 looking junk pages. I am counting on Google to do this right though. It won’t make the most pretty or efficient apps, but it’s something to play with. I can finally get working on that Portfolioso quotes app.

Fuck Off, WordPress (Rant 2.0)

I was typing an epic post again. Then I pressed submit. Then it took me to the login page when I was already logged in. I went to check the draft and there was one line there. For fuck’s sake, what a piece of shit. I actually spent time on it. When is this shit going to do real time saving like Google Docs? I’m sick of losing shit, like I did that other time.

Note to self: always copy the fucking thing every once in a while for good measure. I don’t learn

Seven Months with A Droid: What Could Have Been Improved

What sucks, in bulleted form, to get to the point:

  • It’s heavy
  • It’s slow. The 550MHZ processor is pretty awful when loading javascript intensive webpages. It’s almost painful to browse the web on the Droid, even on WiFi (forget about Verizon’s 3G ). Half the time, my menus lag and the UI can be pretty jerky at times. I am blaming the sluggishness on Android 2.1 which is pretty slow. When 2.2 comes out with an improved Dalvik VM and V8 as the javascript engine, it will be much faster.
  • The keyboard slider thing gets loose over time, so it flops around like an asshole.
  • The back of the keyboard slider has plastic wrap on it, which bubbles up over time
  • The keyboard is cramped
  • Sometimes the GPS doesn’t connect unless you reboot the phone. I returned mine and got a new one and the GPS worked better, so it might have been a hardware problem, but it still happens at times.
  • Battery life is eh, but aren’t all smartphones? So no negative points here.

I still love it because it’s the only Verizon phone that does raw Android these days. And I don’t like the Droid X, Droid 2 or HTC Incredible, so I’m happy for now. I’m still jealous of the Nexus One because it’s sleek, but Google botched the launch of that phone. I would have done it differently (and better).

Posting From the Boonies

If you read my blog today, the posts were written yesterday and autopublished because I’m far away from civilization in the middle of nowhere. Last time I was here, there was no 3G and poor cell service. Surprisingly, the towers were upgraded and 3G is available now, so I’m writing this from my Droid. The 3G speeds are pretty bad though. I’m good for about 500KBPS.

Anyway, I’m out this bitch because we just lost power from a storm, so cya in the real world in a few.
