Random Ass News Links of the day (8/4/2010)

Okay so you know how last month I took a bunch of interesting stories in the news that day and wrote my opinions of them? I like doing that randomly. Except the last one was titled Random News Stories From Around The Web With Commentary Blah blah blah.. Worst title in the history of blogging. So I present to you, my new segment Random-ass news links of the day (this week, literally ass links – SFW). So enjoy:

Nike’s New Ad Campaign is Legit – This is why advertising works. If you want me to fall for your product, just throw a bunch of nice asses in my face and I’m sold. I’m more of a New Balance guy in the sneaker department, but because of that ad, I’m actually on my way to Modells right now writing this from mobile to get a pair of new Nike kicks. And they weren’t even advertising sneakers. With all due respect, Reebok was into the whole ass commercial thing first.

Google Abandons Wave – Good. I’m all for Google and like their shit, but there was absolutely no point of Google Wave. between GMail, Docs (in realtime) and Google Chat, you don’t need an extra tool for people to log in to. I waited a year to get an invite and when I finally got one, it was the most useless thing ever.

Android Is Number 1 – In Q2, Android was the top selling OS, with. It has grown 886% since Q2 last year. Apple fanboys response? “We have one device you have many” Kind of doesn’t help that you only have one carrier too… AT&T sucks.

Hmm thought I had more links. Oh well. Those will do

Android App of the Week: Facebook For Android

Up until yesterday Facebook’s Android app was a huge shitpile. It had so little function that the mobile website version was better.

I’m not saying they got it perfect, but it’s much improved. They added events, made it look better and all of that.

What’s missing:

  • Facebook chat
  • Te ability to view tagged photos of me or another person (this one kills me because I can only look at my or other peoples’ albums)
  • Tagging photos from the device

So check for an update in the market and see for yourself.

My First Chiptune (Well… A remix)

Last Saturday’s song(s) of the week featured chiptunes / keygen music. So I was playing around in OpenMPT and messing with some samples and patterns I found in a song file from an old game and came up with this:

Note about the music player above: The embed thingy above should be using html5 audio tag and play within your browser. It should work in Firefox 3.6, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Embedded is an .ogg file which is an open source format with great compression and high quality. HTML5 supports .ogg playback so your computer doesn’t need any special software. If you’re using some piece of shit browser like IE, it will generate a flash fallback player, but the file will not play because Flash doesn’t natively playback .ogg format. For fuck’s sake, use Firefox or Chrome)

The original song was featured on the level Medevo in the 1994 DOS game Jazz Jackrabbit. I thought it had potential but didn’t like how it was sequenced, so I completely changed it up. Let’s say I made it a little bit more… Keygen-ish. If this interests you contact me for the original version to see how much it changed. I promise it’s not really like the original. $heep named devimo because it’s a scramble of medevo, the original level name.

Download the .XM file here (plays in WinAMP or VLC). XM

What’s an .xm file? XM files, or eXtended Modules, contain numerous small (less than one second) sound samples in them. The music is sequenced on the fly using patterns. Meaning the samples. Think of it like an autotune. In this track, each drum sound is a sample along with the ahhh, the synth sound, a bass sound and the electronic sound chirpy sound. All you do is make patterns out of sounds and loop it. That’s how the file is so small.

Enjoy. And if you don’t like it, I don’t care. I do.

Goldstein If You’re Reading This…

You’re welcome for the emergency hosting 😛

Thanks for the file.

Fuck Apple’s Magic Trackpad and Fanboys at TechCrunch Who Say the Mouse is Dead

What the fuck is the point of this stupid piece of shit?

You know what’s a pain in the ass about laptops? Fucking touchpads. You need to get used to them because each one is different and they generally suck. They’re only there for convenience and they’re better than that stupid nipple trackpoint mouse (SFW) that IBM used to use back in the day. In four years, trackpads fucking wear out.

Then you get Apple which releases this “stylish” stupid piece of shit. Please explain to me why anyone with a desktop would want to put a freakin touchpad on it? And wireless to eat through expensive batteries? Who would also waste $69 on something so useless? You’ll get carpal tunnel using that pitched piece of crap.

On Thursday, my news feeds from the tech sites I read daily all blew up with the announcement of this fucking contraption. Of the 4 tech blogs I subscribe to on my RSS there had to be at least 12 bloggers write 20 posts about it. It almost made me rage. I was trying to read Barstool’s guess that ass, check out the smokeshow of the day and smut news in general but all I saw was this stupid thing.

This touchpad isn’t even revolutionary since it’s been done before. Apple just took the concept and put multitouch and bluetooth in it and released it knowing stupid brainwashed morons will buy it.

Then you get this jerkoff Apple fanboy MG Siegler over at TechCrunch who writes an article that the mouse is dead because of this revolutionary new product, and how kids growing up only use trackpads so the mouse will die. Next, people call him an asshole and Mr. Flip Flop took it all back was like “Yeah, it’s going to be a slow process, but the mouse will still die. It’s just a mouse – stop complaining. Oh, and it’s still amazing.” What an asshole.

NEWS FLASH MG Shithead: How do you play games on a touchpad? How do you edit audio with precision? Video? You can’t. The mouse is far from dead. You have these $80 laser precision 6000DPI mice that are way beyond my need or comprehension and you want everyone to switch to a half assed touchpad? What are we going backwards? Touchpads are good for laptops and touchscreens are the future for mobile platforms. But not desktops. Period.

Apple never fails to make me rage.
